The Western Boys Varsity Basketball team lost to the Haslett Vikings 64-52 in the Regional finals at Marshall on Thursday night. The Panthers got off to a slow start and trailed by 8 after the first period. The guys battled during the second quarter but still found themselves down by 10 heading into halftime. After the break, Haslett came out hot and extended their lead to 17 heading into the final quarter. Western never gave up and cut the Vikings’ lead to 10 in the middle of the fourth quarter but couldn’t make enough plays down the stretch to finish the comeback. The Panthers were led by Nathan Burk and Landon French with 17 points each. Burk had another great all around game with 6 assists, 8 rebounds, and 3 steals. French ripped down 7 rebounds while knocking down 3 triples from the outside. Trey Cottingham also finished in double digits with 11 points. Western ends their season with an overall record of 18-6.
“Our guys fought so hard tonight. We got off to a slow start offensively and you can’t do that against a great team like Haslett. We dug ourselves too big of a hole and couldn’t get out of it. I am so proud of this team. They battled every night and to finish the season with a league championship and a district title is something our boys will never forget.”
