Panthers News · Boys Track Does Well at the State Meet!

In the midst of three stadium evacuations and about six hours of delays due to inclement weather, ten Panthers competed in eight events at the MHSAA State Finals. Three athletes finished all-state, and Western placed ninth as a team.
Junior Matt Veneziano is a state champion in the high jump (6′-6″), senior Tyler Oxley was third place in the shot put (53′-1″), and sophomore Sid Varland finished tied for fifth place in the high jump (6′-2″).
In other field events, senior Brady Yokom threw the discus 135′-8″ and placed 13th in the event. In the pole vault, sophomore Jacob Tidwell vaulted 13′-4″ and finished in a painful 9th place (medals and all-state honors go to the Top 8 in each event).
On the track, Gezahegn Starr ran both the 1600m (11th place, 4:29.13) and the 3200m (24th, 9:53.52), the 4x100m relay team of Junior Dale, Sid Varland, Caden Embury, and James Bloomfield finished tied for 10th place (44.58), and Ian Devin ran a strong 300m hurdles, until he tripped over the leg of another runner and bit it over the final hurdle. He picked himself up and stumbled over the finish line for 12th place and a season-best time of 41.43 seconds.
