Western Varsity Week 6 Recap- BC Pennfield
Due to the scare of the EEE virus, the Western Football team battled Battle Creek Pennfield at 4:30 Friday afternoon. The early start didn’t bother Western one bit, as they stormed out to a commanding 35-0 halftime lead. Western’s Landons came up big in the first half as senior ace back Landon Raczkowski scored three rushing touchdowns and junior wide receiver Landon French caught two touchdown passes from senior quarterback Tyler Pape. Junior Clay Falde was 5-5 on first half PAT’s and the stingy Western defense had all the answers to anything Pennfield attempted.
In the second half, the story didn’t change. Western scored two more touchdowns, one on an interception return for a touchdown by senior Mason Gillespie, and the second one on a rushing touchdown by junior running back Bode Brown. The only thing that seemed to limit the visiting Panthers in the second half was the running clock, as mandated by MHSAA rules. Defensive highlights would have to include the five interceptions Western produced. Gillespie had two, and the other picks came from senior linebacker Wyatt Heavy, senior defensive back Robbie Smith, and a rare interception by junior defensive lineman Michael McAninch. The only drama in the 4th quarter was whether Western could preserve the shutout, which they were able to accomplish and the final score ended up 49-0 in Western’s favor.
Tyler Pape ended up an efficient 8/9 for 90 yards and 2 td’s. Landon Raczkowski rushed 13 times for 140 yards and 3 td’s.
Coach Mifsud said “It was a good win and team performance from the opening kickoff. I liked the positive attitude, focus, and confidence that our team played with today. It was great to see some players who don’t normally get the opportunity step up and do some really good things in the game. Now we have to grow, improve, and get ready for the Coldwater Cardinals”.
